親はつい子どもの才能や知能をほめて、気分をよくさせたくなるものだ。だが、研究によると、そうしたほめ言葉はいい結果を生まないようだ。ほめるなら子どもの努力や、集中力、時間の使い方などをほめるほうがはるかに効果がある。たとえばあなたの子どもが試験でいい点をとったら、「ずいぶんよく勉強したね」「遊びにいったりしないで、時間をちゃんと使ってえらかったわ」「大変だったのに、よくがんばったね」などとほめる。（中略）こうしたほめ言葉で子どものがんばる力や柔軟性、忍耐力がはげまされる。さらにそれらの点を明確にするために、子供が自分の使った技術や作戦を思い出させるような質問をする。
頭がいいとほめられるだけだと、同時に失敗を恐れるようになり、さらにがんばらなくてもできると勘違いする、そして実際に悪い成績を取るとやる気をなくしてしまうという。
